Mah Lai Koh ~ Steamed Cake (马来糕)
Make 2 (18.5 by 12.5 by 5 cm) Aluminum Tray or 1 (9-inch / 22 cm) round tin
Ingredients:
- 1-3/4 cup Plain Flour
- 1 tbsp Custard Powder
- 1-1/2 tbsp Baking Powder
- 3/4 cup + 2 tbsp Sugar
- 60g Butter, Melted
- 60ml Peanut Oil (Can be replace by Melted Butter too)
- 1 tsp Vanilla Essence
- 180ml Milk
- 3 Large Eggs
Method:
- Sift flour, custard powder and baking powder into a large mixing bowl. Add in sugar and mix well.
- Add melted butter, peanut oil, vanilla essence and milk, mix till well-combimed.
- Lastly add in egg, one at a time. Keep stirring till a smooth sticky batter.
- Pour into lightly greased tin/tray and steamed over high heat for 30 mins till cooked.
- Cool completely before cutting.

Tazz, as what I know (coorect me if I'm wrong)... Mah Lai Koh slightly oilier and heavier than Steamed Egg Cake. Taste wise also slightly different loh.

Hi Fonia... thanks for sharing this wonderful recipe with us... by the way, can i just check with you.... what's the measurement of the Vanillla Essence... cos u said "1 Vanilla Essence" so is it 1 Teaspoon?
all of sudden everyone into ma lai koh ? thought they uses brown sugar for that..

Fonia, I have been looking around for this recipe for quite a while. From the ingredients, seems like its quite easy to make. Don't have custard powder so can I omit & how it looks & taste like without custard powder. Tks

Xinying, Welcome ya! I'm sori for the late reply! (Anyone correct me if I'm wrong) As known custard powder is a form of thinkener with sweet aroma and yellow colouring added. Mayb you can replace it by corn flour... HTHs!

Luv your blog & thks for sharing all the home recipes. Just want to check with u the amount of the baking powder.....11/2 Tablespoon.......is this measurement correct??? Seems like a lot of baking powder for one recipe. Luvs this cake......everytime when i'm back in M'cca,i'll go for the morning Tim Sum breakfast & will not miss this order....
